Key takeaways

  • As of October 2026, an Advantage+ campaign is any sales, app or leads campaign with Advantage+ budget, audience and placements all switched on.
  • Advantage+ sales campaigns replaced Advantage+ shopping campaigns, and Meta blocked legacy shopping campaign creation across all API versions by May 19, 2026.
  • The existing customer budget cap is no longer available, so you rebuild it with two ad sets and spending limits.
  • Advantage+ works best for accounts with steady conversion volume, clean tracking and a regular supply of new creative.

What are Advantage+ campaigns in 2026?

An Advantage+ campaign is a sales, app or leads campaign where Meta’s automation controls budget, audience and placements. Meta’s developer documentation describes a unified Advantage+ campaign experience for sales, app and leads. It replaces the separate manual, Advantage+ shopping and Advantage+ app workflows.

A campaign counts as Advantage+ only when all three levers are on:

  1. Budget: set at the campaign level with a supported bid strategy.
  2. Audience: Advantage+ audience on, or targeting limited to the criteria Meta allows.
  3. Placements: no placement targeting or exclusions at the ad set level.

If any lever is off, Meta marks the campaign as DISABLED for Advantage+. It then runs as a regular campaign.

Meta first previewed this shift in February 2025. Search Engine Land reported that advertisers would no longer choose between manual and automated campaigns. Meta also claimed early tests of Advantage+ leads campaigns showed a 10% lower cost per qualified lead. That figure is Meta’s own and is not independently verified.

What happened to Advantage+ shopping campaigns?

Advantage+ shopping campaigns were replaced by Advantage+ sales campaigns, and the old setup is now closed. Meta’s October 2025 developer blog said new legacy campaigns could no longer be created through API v24.0 from October 8, 2025. Social Media Today reported in February 2026 on the v25.0 release. From then, these campaigns “can no longer be created or updated using the Marketing API.” It added that the block extended to all API versions by May 19, 2026.

Meta’s documentation says that in v26.0, all legacy campaigns become uneditable and can no longer be migrated. If you still run one, plan to rebuild it.

Here is how the two compare, based on Jon Loomer’s breakdown (updated March 2025) and Meta’s legacy shopping campaign documentation.

When should you use Advantage+ instead of a manual campaign?

Use Advantage+ when the account already has steady conversion data and you want to scale. Use manual when you need tight control or have little data. That is the broad split in an AdManage.ai guide from July 2026.

Advantage+ tends to fit when:

  • The pixel and Conversions API are already sending clean purchase data.
  • Purchase volume is healthy and the product has broad appeal.
  • Weekly budget comfortably covers about 50 times your target cost per purchase.
  • You can supply new creative regularly.

Manual or hybrid setups tend to fit when:

  • The account is new or has low conversion volume.
  • You need strict control over new versus existing customers.
  • You are testing new offers or landing pages.
  • Legal, compliance or geographic rules limit who can see the ad.

AdManage.ai bases the 50 times rule on the learning phase threshold of about 50 optimization events per ad set per week. Before you scale, compare your numbers with a good ROAS for ecommerce. Then find your break even point with the free break even ROAS calculator.

How do you set up an Advantage+ sales campaign?

You set it up by choosing the Sales objective and leaving budget, audience and placements on their Advantage+ settings. These steps follow the AdManage.ai guide and Meta’s developer documentation.

  1. Create a new campaign and choose Sales.
  2. Confirm Advantage+ shows as on at the top of the campaign.
  3. Keep Advantage+ campaign budget on. Choose a bid strategy: lowest cost (Meta’s recommended option), cost cap, bid cap or minimum ROAS.
  4. In the audience section, add controls only for real business rules. Put interests and lookalikes in suggestions.
  5. Leave Advantage+ placements on unless you have a compliance reason.
  6. Choose the conversion event. For most stores this is Purchase.
  7. Connect a catalog if you sell multiple products.
  8. Add distinct creative concepts, not minor edits of one ad. AdManage.ai suggests 5 to 10 assets to start.
  9. Check attribution settings, UTMs and naming before you publish.

Meta’s documentation notes that migrated or copied campaigns reenter the learning stage, with no workaround. Expect a reset if you move an old campaign into the new structure.

What controls do you still have in Advantage+ campaigns?

You still control location, a minimum age, language and custom audience exclusions, plus account level limits. Everything else is a suggestion that Meta can go beyond.

Audience controls and suggestions

The AdManage.ai guide lists location, minimum age, language and custom audience exclusions as controls as of mid 2026. In the Advantage+ setup, Jon Loomer found (May 2025) that minimum age can only be a control if it is 25 or lower. Any maximum age is a suggestion. Gender, custom audiences, lookalikes and detailed targeting are suggestions by default.

Account controls

Meta’s shopping campaign documentation lists optional ad account controls that apply across campaigns:

  • A minimum age from 18 to 25.
  • Location exclusions by country, region, city, DMA or zip code.
  • Placement exclusions for Audience Network, Facebook Marketplace and the Facebook right column.

Account level placement exclusions do not switch off Advantage+. Ad set level exclusions do.

Existing customer budget cap

The cap is gone. Jon Loomer quotes Meta saying it “is no longer available. You can still do the same thing manually.” Meta’s developer documentation describes the workaround:

  1. Define existing customers with custom audiences, such as your customer list and past purchasers.
  2. Create one ad set that includes existing customers.
  3. Create a second ad set that excludes them.
  4. Use ad set spending limits to cap how much goes to the existing customer ad set.

Refresh the customer list often. A stale list lets past buyers leak into prospecting.

What are the most common Advantage+ mistakes?

The most common mistake is treating suggestions as hard targeting. Lookalikes and interests are starting signals, not gates. The AdManage.ai guide lists several others:

  • Putting the customer exclusion list in suggestions instead of controls.
  • Restricting placements without a strong reason, which also turns off Advantage+.
  • Underfunding the campaign compared with your cost per purchase, which leads to Learning Limited.
  • Uploading small variations of one creative instead of different concepts.
  • Making large, sudden budget jumps.
  • Following 2023 or 2024 guides that still mention the existing customer cap.
  • Trusting platform ROAS without checking store orders.

Advantage+ can count existing customers who would have bought anyway. Compare Ads Manager with your store data. Our guide on why ad platforms report more sales than your store explains the gap.

FAQ

Is Advantage+ shopping still available in 2026?

No. Meta replaced it with Advantage+ sales campaigns. Legacy shopping campaigns could no longer be created or updated through any API version from May 19, 2026, according to Social Media Today.

Can I exclude past customers in an Advantage+ campaign?

Yes. Add your customer list as a custom audience exclusion under audience controls. Keep the list updated so recent buyers are excluded too.

How many ads can I run in an Advantage+ sales campaign?

Up to 50 ads per ad set, according to Jon Loomer’s March 2025 breakdown. You can run more by spreading them across several ad sets.

Does Advantage+ work for lead generation?

Meta offers an Advantage+ leads version for the Leads objective. Meta reported a 10% lower cost per qualified lead in early tests, which is Meta’s own claim.
