Key takeaways

  • Triple Whale reports a median Meta CPM of $15.06 and a median CPA of $38.99 for August 2025 to July 2026.
  • WordStream and LocaliQ report a median Facebook traffic CPC of $0.70 and a median cost per lead of $27.66 in their 2025 benchmarks.
  • Meta says its average price per ad rose 12% year over year in the second quarter of 2026, so costs are still climbing.
  • A Facebook ad cost is only good or bad once you compare it with your break even ROAS and your maximum affordable CPA.

How much do Facebook ads cost in 2026?

Most advertisers pay roughly $15 per 1,000 impressions, $0.70 to $1.92 per click and $28 to $39 per lead or purchase. Those are medians from the two largest recent studies. Your own numbers can be far higher or lower.

Triple Whale’s Meta ads benchmarks cover more than 40,000 brands from August 2025 to July 2026. They report a median CPM of $15.06, up 13.24% from $13.30 a year earlier. Median CPA was $38.99 and median ROAS was 1.88. The sample is mostly ecommerce brands.

The WordStream and LocaliQ Facebook ads benchmarks study 554 US traffic campaigns and 726 US lead campaigns from April 2024 to June 2025. The page was last updated in September 2026. Its averages are medians.

How much do Instagram ads cost compared with Facebook?

Instagram ads are bought in the same Meta ad system as Facebook ads, so most credible studies report them together. Triple Whale’s figures above explicitly combine Facebook and Instagram.

We could not find a 2025 or 2026 study with a clear method that splits CPM by Instagram placement. Many blog posts quote Reels or Stories CPMs. Most of them do not cite a data source, sample or period. We left those numbers out.

The practical answer is to measure it in your own account:

  1. Run one campaign with Facebook and Instagram placements switched on.
  2. In Ads Manager, break results down by placement.
  3. Compare cost per result, not CPM, for each placement.
  4. Keep a placement only if its cost per result sits under your maximum CPA.

A cheap CPM on one placement means little if that placement rarely converts.

What is a good Facebook ad cost by industry?

A good cost depends heavily on industry, and the spread is wide. In the WordStream 2025 data, cost per lead ranged from $3.16 for Restaurants and Food to $76.71 for Dentists and Dental Services.

Lead generation (WordStream, 2025)

  • Highest cost per lead: Dentists and Dental Services at $76.71, Health and Fitness at $52.98, Beauty and Personal Care at $51.42.
  • Lowest cost per lead: Restaurants and Food at $3.16, Real Estate at $16.61, Career and Employment at $17.64.
  • Highest lead campaign CPC: Dentists and Dental Services at $9.78, Attorneys and Legal Services at $4.10.
  • Highest traffic CPC: Finance and Insurance at $1.22. Lowest: Shopping, Collectibles and Gifts at $0.34.

Ecommerce purchases (Triple Whale, Aug 2025 to Jul 2026)

  • Electronics: $51.86 median CPA.
  • Travel Accessories and Luggage: $50.95.
  • Home and Garden: $47.93.
  • Apparel and Accessories: $36.98.
  • Baby: $29.61.
  • Online courses: $26.80.

Compare yourself with your own industry row. The overall median hides most of the useful detail.

Why are Facebook ads getting more expensive?

Meta charges more per ad because demand is outgrowing supply. In its second quarter 2026 results, Meta said ad impressions rose 14% year over year and average price per ad rose 12%.

The studies show the same trend:

  • Triple Whale’s median CPM rose 13.24% year over year.
  • WordStream’s median cost per lead rose 20.94%, from $22.87 to $27.66.
  • WordStream’s lead conversion rate fell from 8.67% to 7.72%.

Not every cost went up. WordStream’s traffic CPC fell 6.67% to $0.70. Search Engine Land’s coverage notes Facebook leads still cost far less than the $70.11 Google Ads average in the same report. For a fuller comparison, read Meta ads vs Google ads.

What drives the cost of a Facebook ad?

The auction decides your cost, and the highest bid does not always win. A May 2026 explainer from Dotidot describes Meta scoring each ad on three inputs.

  1. Your bid. The most you will pay for the result you chose.
  2. Estimated action rate. How likely this person is to take that action.
  3. Ad quality. How well people respond to the ad.

An ad with strong predicted response and quality can beat a bigger bid. That is why creative and offer quality move cost so much.

Other drivers you control:

  • Objective. In WordStream’s data, lead campaign clicks ($1.92) cost almost three times traffic clicks ($0.70).
  • Optimization event. Rarer events, like purchases, cost more per result than clicks.
  • Landing page conversion rate. A page that converts twice as well halves your cost per result at the same CPC.
  • Data volume. Meta’s own guidance, updated April 2026, says ad sets stabilize after 50 events in 7 days. Its launch guide warns that missing that threshold “can increase your costs per result.”

How much should you spend per day on Facebook ads to start?

A practical starting budget is enough to buy about 50 conversions a week in one ad set. Meta states the 50 events in 7 days threshold on its developer resources pages, as of April 2026.

Use this formula:

Daily budget = target CPA × 50 ÷ 7

  1. Estimate your likely CPA from your industry benchmark above.
  2. Multiply by 50 to get the weekly spend.
  3. Divide by 7 for a daily budget.
  4. If that number is too high, optimize for a more frequent event, such as add to cart, until volume grows.

Two worked examples using the medians:

  • Lead generation at $27.66 per lead: about $198 a day.
  • Ecommerce at $38.99 per purchase: about $279 a day.

You can start lower. Cropink’s 2026 summary of Meta’s minimum budget rules lists $1 a day for impression goals and $5 a day for clicks. A low budget will run, but it may never collect enough data to stabilize.

Also note Meta’s budget documentation says a daily budget can overspend by up to 25% on some days. A $100 daily budget may spend $125 on a given day.

How do you know if your Facebook ad cost is profitable?

Your ad cost is profitable when your ROAS beats your break even ROAS. Break even ROAS equals 1 divided by your profit margin after product, shipping and fees.

  1. Work out your margin. Example: 40% margin after costs.
  2. Break even ROAS = 1 ÷ 0.40 = 2.5.
  3. Maximum CPA = average order value × margin. At an $80 order and 40% margin, that is $32.
  4. Compare with your actual CPA and ROAS in Ads Manager.

In that example, the $38.99 median CPA would lose money on a first order. Triple Whale’s 1.88 median ROAS would also sit below a 2.5 break even. That does not make Meta unprofitable. It means many brands rely on repeat purchases or higher margins.

Run your own numbers with the break even ROAS calculator, or read what break even ROAS means. Check store revenue too, because ad platforms often report more sales than your store.

FAQ

Is $10 a day enough for Facebook ads?

Ten dollars a day will deliver ads, but it buys few conversions. At the $27.66 median cost per lead, it buys about 2 or 3 leads a week. Meta says an ad set needs 50 events a week to stabilize.

Are Instagram ads cheaper than Facebook ads?

There is no reliable 2025 or 2026 study that answers this with a clear method. Run both placements together and compare cost per result by placement in Ads Manager.

Why did my Facebook CPM go up?

Meta reported a 12% rise in average price per ad in the second quarter of 2026. Seasonal demand, narrow audiences and weak creative can push your own CPM higher still.

What is a good ROAS on Facebook ads?

A good ROAS is any ROAS above your break even point. See what a good ROAS for ecommerce looks like for more context.
