Best Time to Post on Instagram in 2026 (4 Studies Compared)
On this page

Key takeaways

  • Three of the four big 2026 Instagram timing studies favor weekdays, most often Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.
  • Sprout Social, Hootsuite and Buffer mostly point to midday through evening, while Later’s 2024 dataset favors 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. local time.
  • Every study pools other accounts, so your own Instagram Insights follower activity is a better starting point than any chart.
  • A 2 to 4 week test that rotates two or three slots and compares reach per post shows your own best time.

What is the best time to post on Instagram in 2026?

The most common answer across 2026 studies is a weekday between noon and 7 p.m. in your audience’s local time. Sprout Social names Tuesday 1 to 7 p.m. and Wednesday noon to 9 p.m. as its strongest windows. Buffer ranks Wednesday as its best day overall. Hootsuite says engagement peaks in early mornings and early evenings, especially early in the week.

Weekends look weak in most of the data. Sprout says Saturdays and Sundays give the lowest engagement overall. Buffer calls Friday and Saturday the weakest days.

Treat these as starting points, not rules. The studies disagree on hours, and your audience may not match their averages.

What do Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Buffer and Later each report?

Each study uses a different sample, period and metric. Here is what each one is built on, as of October 2026.

  • Sprout Social (published March 31, 2026): nearly 2 billion engagements across about 307,000 profiles on six networks. The data runs from November 27, 2025 to February 27, 2026. Times are in each audience’s local time.
  • Hootsuite (published July 14, 2026, updated October 2, 2026): over 1 million social posts, localized across 118 countries, analyzed with Critical Truth. The page does not state a collection period.
  • Buffer (published September 23, 2026): 9.6 million Instagram posts from more than 200,000 accounts, January 2024 to December 2025. It ranks slots by median engagement rate.
  • Later (updated April 21, 2026): over 6 million feed posts, including over 975,000 Reels. The data runs from January to October 2024, so it is the oldest of the four. Read it with that in mind (Later).

Buffer lists three top slots per day in ranked order. Its overall top three are Thursday 9 a.m., Wednesday noon and Wednesday 6 p.m. Later names 5 a.m. as its single best time and midnight as its best time for Reels.

Why do the best time studies disagree?

The studies disagree because they measure different accounts, periods and metrics. Buffer uses engagement rate per follower. Sprout counts engagements across six networks. Later’s numbers come from 2024, before many of the 2025 ranking and format changes.

The pages also have internal inconsistencies. Buffer lists Friday 6 a.m. as a top Friday slot, yet calls Friday weak across all slots. Sprout’s industry tables sometimes give different hours than its own text. That does not make the studies useless. It means the exact hour is a guess, while the weekday pattern is more reliable.

Industry matters too. Sprout finds retail strongest on weekdays, mostly noon to 3 p.m. It finds food and beverage strongest on weekdays, mostly 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Hootsuite says morning posts work best for consumer goods, retail, marketing and media.

Does posting time still matter to the Instagram algorithm?

Posting time matters mainly because early engagement is a ranking input. In Instagram’s own ranking explainer, Adam Mosseri lists “how quickly people are liking, commenting, sharing and saving a post” as a Feed signal. He also lists when a post was shared. That explainer dates from May 31, 2023, so treat it as background rather than current detail.

So a post that lands while your followers are active has a better chance to collect fast engagement. It is not a guarantee. Timing helps followers see a post early, but it cannot replace content people want to watch, save and share.

How do you find your best time in Instagram Insights?

You can see when your own followers are online in two or three taps, if you have a creator or business account. Buffer gives these steps as of September 2026:

  1. Open your profile and tap Professional dashboard below your bio.
  2. Tap New followers.
  3. Scroll to Follower active times to see the days and hours your followers are most active.

On desktop, open instagram.com, click Dashboard, choose Account under Insights, and scroll to Followers. Menu names change often, so look for the follower activity chart if a label differs.

This chart shows when followers use the app, not when they engage. Buffer makes the same point. Use it to pick slots to test, not as a final answer.

How do you test your own best time in 2 to 4 weeks?

You can find your own best slot by rotating a few time windows and comparing results per post. Here is a simple method.

  1. Pick three slots. Take one slot from your Insights peak, one from the studies (for example Wednesday at noon), and one wildcard.
  2. Keep everything else steady. Use the same format and similar topics in each slot. Do not compare a Reel at 9 a.m. with a carousel at 6 p.m.
  3. Post on a fixed rhythm. Buffer suggests 3 to 5 feed posts a week as a baseline. That gives you 6 to 20 posts over 2 to 4 weeks.
  4. Rotate the slots. Spread posts evenly so each slot gets the same number of posts and similar weekdays.
  5. Measure per post at 48 hours. Log reach, views, likes, shares and saves. Divide likes and shares by reach so bigger posts do not skew the result.
  6. Compare the averages. Keep the slot with the best reach and engagement per reach. If two slots tie, keep the one that fits your team’s workflow.
  7. Retest each quarter. Audiences shift with seasons, campaigns and new followers. Hootsuite suggests a review once or twice a year or after major changes.

A month of data from your own account beats a chart built on accounts that are not yours. Small samples are noisy, so look for consistent gaps, not one viral post.

What should you do once you know your best time?

Schedule your strongest content into your best slot and keep testing the others. Put your highest effort posts, such as launches and offers, where your data says reach is highest.

If a post performs well organically, it can be a good candidate for paid reach. Paid campaigns follow different rules, so read Meta ads vs Google ads before you decide where budget goes. SureSocial runs Meta ads and Google ads, and the first step is a free 30 minute strategy call on Zoom.

FAQ

Is Sunday a bad day to post on Instagram?

In most 2026 data, yes. Sprout Social calls Sunday one of the worst days, though Buffer rates Sunday evenings as moderate. Check your own Insights before you drop it.

What is the best time to post Reels on Instagram?

Later’s data says midnight is the best time for Reels, but that data is from 2024. Buffer pooled all formats and says Reels may peak at different times. Test your Reels separately from feed posts.

How often should I post on Instagram?

Buffer recommends 3 to 5 feed posts per week plus 1 to 2 stories a day as a baseline. Consistency matters more for testing than raw volume.

Which time zone should I use?

Use your audience’s time zone, not yours. All four studies report times in local time, and your Insights chart shows when your own followers are active.
